After hearing horror stories of people using one-man-band carpenters for their windows, we decided to go with a large local company with a prominent showroom. A trial right from the start. We'd taken the measurements to get the initial quote, which we were happy with, but it took weeks before the sales rep would come to our how to take the final measurements for himself. They give a delivery time of 70 days from the measurement and so ordering in September, we thought we'd have them by Christmas. As it was nearing the end of the 70 day period, we contacted them - they couldn't give us a delivery date, but it wouldn't be before the end of January, as there production line was full. We couldn't understand why they hadn't been made already but there was nothing we could do - we couldn't get our deposit back - they said they'd used it to buy the wood - and they couldn't hurry the production along. So we waited until the end of January, and heard nothing. We went back and they still weren't ready. We asked for an appointment to see the director, which we did but it was fruitless. He just sat in a bare office, playing with a door hinge saying there was nothing he could do, and that the 70 day delivery period as stated in their contract was just a guideline. When he did ring us up a few weeks' later, he declared the arrival of our windows to be a 'miracle'. They arranged a delivery date and asked for full payment upon delivery. We said no payment until they are fitted, which they reluctantly agreed to, and sent the fitters the following day. One of the windows had been made with the wrong glass and there was a tear in one of the integral flyscreens. Never been so glad to finish doing business with anyone. The whole experience took 6 months - the price you pay for going with a large company??
